Training Your Spiritual Sense
For everyone who lives on milk is still an infant, inexperienced in the message of righteousness. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong. – Hebrews 5:14
The Many Spiritual Senses:
Every human has a total of 5 senses in our body along with the sense of mind and heart. Together they make 7 senses, each having its own characteristic. Each of the 7 senses has inward (self) and outward (outer world) expressions.
This multiplies them into 14 spiritual senses. Together the senses are 14, but if divided it shows that the man lives with 7 physical or natural and 7 spiritual senses.
- Spiritual eyes- Psalm 119:18
- Spiritual ears– psalm 40:6
- Spiritual taste – Psalm 34:8
- Spiritual touch – Acts 8:18
- Spiritual smell – 2 Corinthians 2:14
- Spiritual conscience- Romans 2:15
- Spiritual Heart – Ephesians 1:18
Sharpening our spiritual senses is a call to an experiential relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ – not just knowing about Him but actually knowing Him through shared experiences, being actively engaged in a personal partnership with Him. The five physical senses are: hearing, seeing, feeling, smelling, tasting. Our spiritual senses are the inner correlates to the physical senses. We may see visions; we may hear God’s voice; we may feel His presence; we may taste the goodness of God; and we may smell the sweet aroma of His Fragrance. We need to pay attention to our spiritual senses and train ourselves to use them, under complete submission to the Lord Jesus Christ. To use spiritual senses without submitting to the Lordship of Jesus Christ is to practice witchcraft. Witchcraft is satan’s counterfeit to the work of the Holy Spirit.
But in order to live an effective supernatural lifestyle, it is essential to desire and work towards mastering your physical and spiritual senses. Like me, you may have read so many books about the physical and spiritual senses, but until you become activated and invest time to practice…supernatural growth remains a theory.
In Jeremiah 1:11, it is said “The word of the Lord came to me saying, ‘Jeremiah, what do you see?’ And I said, ‘I see a branch of an almond tree.’ And the Lord said to me, ‘You have seen well, for I am ready to perform My word.’ He wasn’t referring to a physical tree but seeing in the spirit with spiritual eyes.
Having faith that you can believe in the unseen deities like God is only possible through your inner spiritual eye, a great spiritual sense that everyone has but only a few can put to use. When your spiritual senses are awakened, only then you can let go of the fear of negative forces and embrace positive ones.
As a teenager growing up in a ‘non-prophetic’ church environment, I would listen with wonder as only a few people would speak in tongues and give messages and interpretation in the services. This was the only form of prophetic experience I had witnessed in my church community.
During a school summer break, I attended a prophetic prayer meeting with my mother led by a blind woman. The entire experience was amazing to me as I had no language for what was happening neither did I comprehend how this blind woman could be so spiritually sharp to pick up every information both in the natural and in the spirit. I desired what she had and began to pray for the prophetic gift of seeing & hearing in the spirit. It wasn’t until over 20 years later that I became activated and began to put language to my years of experiences.
Hebrews 5:14 says we can train our senses to discern between good and evil. When you train, or practice, for something you expose yourself daily to whatever it is you want to become.
You practice it over and over until it becomes second nature to you. Believe it or not. People who are lazy have actually practiced being lazy. People who are disciplined have practiced being disciplined.
Spending time with God is a “spirit” practice. As you do it diligently, your spirit will grow stronger and will start to overcome the habits of the flesh. If, for example, you have trouble getting up in the morning to spend time with God before the busyness of the day begins, if you’ve been giving in to your flesh and staying in bed, then you’ll have to start practicing getting up. The more you practice it, the easier it will be.
Don’t expect yourself to do it perfectly right from the beginning. Don’t get discouraged when you stumble and fail. You’re just out of practice. Get back on your feet and go at it again!
Become a spiritual athlete, put yourself in training by practicing the things of God. Build your spirit muscles through fellowship with Him. You will be surprised how much progress you will make in a little short space of time. Jesus tapped into the spiritual senses and began to do wonders that many people have never imagined he entered into the senses of knowing.
Your spirit can come to a place where the Ears of the spirit has no distance in order for somebody to hear each other you have to have proximity in the natural to hear one another. But on the other side, your spirit is not limited to space, therefore Jesus knew & addressed the thoughts of people’s hearts.
